CRITICAL HEALTH HUMANITIES

SPEAKER: Jean Franzino, Boston College, Dept of English

Professor Franzino specializes in American literature and culture, disability studies, and the medical humanities. At Boston College, she teaches a range of courses in literature and writing. Prior to coming to BC, she taught at Macalester College and Beloit College; she has also taught writing in a program for aspiring medical school applicants. She has held research fellowships at institutions including the American Antiquarian Society, the Boston Athenaeum, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Her current book project explores how Civil War writing—from government regulations, to hospital newspapers, to “mendicant” texts sold for their authors’ economic support—reflected and performed new understandings of disability in nineteenth-century America.
