How can we imagine a hybrid future for theatre and what tools will we need to embark on it? Christian Rakow, Magda Romanska, and Ulf Otto will each offer a set of provocations to map such a future and discuss their work on “network” theatres, digital festivals, and theatrical technologies.

This event is part of the Symposium Viral Theatres: Pandemic Past/Hybrid Futures, which is taking place at the Tieranatomisches Theater Berlin and online from April 28- April 30, 2022.

Christian Rakow is a theater critic and one of the editors of the theatre online journal nachtkritik.de. He studied German linguistics and literature as well as philosophy in Rostock, Berlin and Sheffield, and earned his doctorate in literary studies in Münster ("The Economies of Realism. Cultural Poetic Studies in Literature and Economics between 1850 and 1900", Berlin, Boston: DeGruyter 2013). He was a member of the jury of the Berlin Theatertreffen (2017-2019) and has been co-organizer of the conference "Theater and the Net" since 2013. He was one of the editors of the volume "Netztheater. Positions, Practice, Productions" (Berlin 2020).

Magda Romanska is a Principal at Harvard metaLAB, an Associate Professor of Theatre at Emerson College in Boston, MA, a Research Associate at the Center for European Studies and Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, and the Chair of Transmedia Arts Seminar at Harvard University Mahindra Humanities Center, where she curates a series of lectures on transmediality. Her research focuses on the intersection of theatre and transmedia, including multiplatform dramaturgy, human/AI interaction in performance, and posthuman theatre and performance. She is also the Founder, Executive Director, and Editor-in-Chief of TheTheatreTimes.com, the largest global digital theatre portal.

Ulf Otto is Professor of Theater Studies and Intermediality at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. His research focuses on the interdependencies of theatricality and technology in industrial as well as post-industrial cultures, and is informed by Science and Technology Studies. He has also worked on reenactments, algorithms, and interventions, and has published with Transkript, Metzler, Alexander Verlage, Theater der Zeit, and in Theater Journal, Theater Research International, and The Drama Review and Centaurus, among others. Recent publications include the monograph Das Theater der Elektrizität (=The Theatre of Electricity, nMetzler 2020) and the anthology Ästhetiken der Intervention (=Aesthetics of Intervention, Theater der Zeit 2022). Current projects deal with the theoretical-methodological elaboration of approaches of Actor-Network-Theory and the testing of methods of Computational Humanities.
